Legacy Edition

A legacy edition is a new release of a game with the game engine from its previous version but with updated content, game data or assets. The reason of having a legacy edition is to make the new version of a game available on a popular platform/console that cannot handle the new game engine features.

For example, the FIFA 20 Legacy Edition is available on Nintendo Switch and features the same gameplay innovation from FIFA 19 without any new development or significant enhancements, but it contains the updated presentation (in-game menus and broadcast overlays), the latest kits and squad updates for the upcoming season, but no new game modes or gameplay innovations. The reason of having FIFA 20 Legacy Edition on Nintendo Switch is that this gaming console cannot handle the new game engine of FIFA 20, but since this platform is very popular, EA makes this game available on it so that the Nintendo Switch fans play FIFA 20 on their Switch consoles.
