The Premier League 2026/27 season is scheduled to begin on 22 August 2026 and conclude on 30 May 2027. The campaign will be the 35th season of the Premier League and the 128th season of top-flight English football. The later start date accommodates the recovery period following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.


Teams

Twenty clubs will compete in the Premier League during the 2026/27 season. The league consists of the 17 teams that retained their Premier League status from 2025/26 and the three clubs promoted from the EFL Championship.

League Format

The Premier League uses a double round-robin format. Each club plays every other club twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 38 matches per team and 380 matches overall.

Teams receive:

  • 3 points for a win
  • 1 point for a draw
  • 0 points for a loss

At the end of the season:

  • The club finishing first is crowned Premier League champion.
  • The top clubs qualify for UEFA competitions.
  • The bottom three clubs are relegated to the EFL Championship.

European Qualification

Premier League clubs can qualify for:

  • UEFA Champions League
  • UEFA Europa League
  • UEFA Conference League

The exact qualification places depend on UEFA allocations and domestic cup results for the season.


New Rules & Developments

  • Front-of-shirt gambling sponsorships are no longer permitted in the Premier League beginning with the 2026/27 season.
  • The season contains 33 weekend match rounds and 5 midweek rounds.
  • No fixtures will be scheduled on Christmas Eve (24 December 2026).
  • Festive fixtures are scheduled with a minimum recovery period between matches to support player welfare.
