The English Premier League has charged both Everton and Nottingham Forest with new breaches of its financial fair play rules. This comes after the Toffees have already been hit with a ten-point penalty and has led many to wonder when Manchester City, who have already been hit with over 100 charges by the league, will be held accountable for their actions.
Both Everton and Nottingham Forest have allegedly broken the Premier League’s sustainability rules, which allows teams to rack up a debt of $133 million over the course of three seasons.
This could lead to fines or even points deductions, which could see both teams relegated from the English top tier. Fans of both teams, or indeed those who like to place a wager on the Premier League, may well look to take this info on board when backing either side to remain in the Premier League, and if you take a keen interest in American football, you may also want to make the most of this enticing DraftKings Super Bowl promo for 2024, with the big game fast approaching.
The Premier League released a statement following the decision to charge both clubs, highlighting that Everton and Nottingham Forest “have each confirmed that they are in breach of the league’s profitability and sustainability rules” before adding,
“This is as a result of sustaining losses above the permitted thresholds for the assessment period ending season 2022-23.”
“In accordance with Premier League rules, both cases have now been referred to the chair of the judicial panel, who will appoint separate commissions to determine the appropriate sanction.”
Sean Dyche’s Everton sit in 17th place in the table, though if they were not already docked ten points, they’d actually be placed comfortably in the table in 12th place. Nottingham Forest, who now have Nuno Santos in charge having sacked Steve Cooper in recent weeks, are in 15th place with 20 points from their first 20 games of the season.
Everton have announced their intentions to fight this latest charge whilst still looking to claw back their early penalty, the Goodison Park side stating,
“The club must now defend another Premier League complaint, which includes the very same financial periods for which it has already been sanctioned before that appeal has even been heard. The club takes the view that this results from a clear deficiency in the Premier League’s rules.”
“Everton can assure its fans that it will continue to defend its position during the ongoing appeal and, should it be required to do so, at any future commission – and that the impact on supporters will be reflected as part of that process.”
Nottingham Forest has spent heavily in recent years, including in excess of $250 million on new players since May 2022, and any possible points deduction could spell disaster for the City Ground side.
Football fans are looking to see how things proceed in these cases and in addition to what possible punishments may be visited upon Manchester City and Chelsea, with the Blues seemingly also being looked into by the Premier League.
