It wasn’t a good campaign generally for English teams in the 2023/24 European competitions, with crucial early blows to challenges posed by participants in their tournaments. But this campaign, English teams are turning it around with impressive displays across Europe’s top competitions. Two leagues stand the chance to earn an additional spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League (UCL) based on their clubs’ performances in European competitions this season. Last year saw the German Bundesliga and Italian Serie A benefit from the functional-coefficient points. Borussia Dortmund and Bologna secured the extra places as German and Italian teams outperformed those from England, France, and Spain.
Over the past six seasons, England and Spain have dominated the competitions in coefficient points, securing seven of the 12 extra Champions League spots, with Italy and Germany claiming two. In 2021-22, a league with fewer than four Champions League participants (the Netherlands) finished in the top two of the average coefficient standings. This history suggests that the top leagues are most likely to secure five Champions League places. The likelihood has only increased with recent performances, which English teams have clearly shown to dominate this season.
With the UEFA Conference League (UCoL) group phase now concluded, initial standings provide a glimpse of the competition for these spots, with the newly introduced bonus points already making an impact. However, nothing is determined as the outcome is still far-fetched. The next significant updates will come after the UEFA Europa League (UEL) first stage concludes on January 23, followed by the UCL stage on January 29.
Performance in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) now carries significantly more weight compared to the UEFA Europa League (UEL) and UEFA Conference League (UCoL). In the updated system, the maximum bonus points a club can earn in the UCL has increased from 12 to 18 (+6). In the UEL, the maximum has risen from eight to 10 (+2), while in the UCoL, it has gone up from four to six (+2).
Additionally, all UCL participants automatically receive six bonus points simply for their participation. In contrast, UEL clubs must finish first to secure six bonus points, while UCoL winners earn four points for first place. Teams finishing outside the top 24 in the UEL or UCoL receive no bonus points. Chelsea bossed the UEFA Conference League with a perfect record in six games, giving maximum points to the Premier League. Portugal's Guimaraes finished second and gave the Premiera Liga an edge in the rankings. While Florentina boosted Italy’s efforts with a direct qualification to the Round of 16.
Liverpool still lead the way after six UCL League phase games and are favorites to secure the top spot in the Champions League. Arsenal and Aston Villa sit in the third and fifth positions respectively, leading crucial races to make it to the top eight and into the Round of 16. Manchester City, with their multiple failures in the League this season, still fall within a play-off spot and are likely to be in one with their upcoming fixtures. In the Europa League, Manchester United and Tottenham are also winning important points for England.
In addition to the bonus points for league positions, teams finishing in the top eight of each competition are guaranteed an extra 1.5 points for advancing to the round of 16. However, no bonus points are awarded for participating in the knockout playoffs. Points can be earned for the outcome of each leg during the playoffs, but these do not apply to the top eight teams. While playoff results contribute to a league’s overall coefficient, they do not count toward a club’s coefficient.
Although outplayed by the English clubs, Italian and Spanish clubs have performed well so far, but German teams have struggled. VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig are currently outside the top 24 in the UCL standings, while TSG Hoffenheim is ranked 26th in the UEL.
The Coefficient Table (As it Stands)
1. England, 14.035 2. Italy, 12.562 3. Portugal, 12.450 4. Belgium, 11.900 5. Spain, 11.892 6. Germany, 10.640 7. France, 9.928 8. Sweden, 9.375 9. Czechia, 8.700 10. Cyprus, 8.687
Eight Teams Make It To The Knockout Round Of The Women’s UCL
The UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage has concluded, and the quarter-finalists have been determined. The draw for the quarter-finals, scheduled for February 7, will set up the home and away ties to be played on March 18/19 and 26/27, as well as the full roadmap leading to the final in Lisbon on May 24.
In the Group Stages, Chelsea and Lyon were undoubtedly the biggest competitors with both finishing in perfect records. The Blues topped Group B with a perfect 18 points after a comeback 2-1 victory over Real Madrid, while Lyon achieved the same feat in Group A by narrowly defeating Wolfsburg 1-0.
In Group A, Lyon secured six wins from six matches in the group stage for the first time, finishing nine points clear of second-placed Wolfsburg. The competition’s most successful side is once again picking up a pace that has seen them challenge in every knockout round for the longest time. In their tenth meeting against Wolfsburg in the competition (which includes four past finals), Daniëlle van de Donk scored a late winner to retain the French side’s 100% start to the competition. The goal was assisted by their key player - Kadidiatou Diani. The result mattered less as both sides made it to the knockout race with Wolfsburg facing the tougher competition.
Roma, already eliminated, defeated Galatasaray on Matchday six, leaving the Turkish side without a single point at the end of the campaign.
In Group B, Chelsea maintained their flawless group stage record and unbeaten record in all competitions by finishing with all 18 points from their games. On match day six, they came from behind to beat Real Madrid 2-1, thanks to a second-half brace of penalties by substitute Catarina Macario. Real Madrid, who already secured second-place qualification, had taken an early lead through Caroline Weir.
Twente celebrated their first home victory in the group stage by defeating Celtic 3-0, but despite their third-place finish, they were eliminated alongside Celtic, who ended their first appearance in the competition without a point. In Group C, Arsenal made a commanding statement by acing runner up Bayern Munich 3-2 in the final Matchday to claim the Group’s Top spot. They turned their campaign around to join fellow English clubs - Chelsea and Manchester City to secure UCL knockout football with impressive displays in the second round of the Champions League campaign. Juventus fell short of qualification following the Gunners victory despite beating Valerenga 3-0.
Defending Champions Barcelona made a statement 3/0 win against Manchester City on the final game day to reclaim the top spot in yet another UCL Group stage tournament. Despite being level on points, the Catalan side avenged their loss to City in the first game of the campaign to secure the top spot. Their 23-goal difference in just six games of Group stage matches is a highlight of their enduring pursuit for a subsequent UCL victory.
Group Winners: Lyon, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Barcelona Runner-ups: Wolfsburg, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City
