Bayern Munich has had an exceptional start in the 2024/25 season with a perfect three wins from three League games. Vincent Kompany’s side reclaimed the top spot in the Bundesliga Table by beating newly promoted side Holstein Kiel 6-1 away from home.
The Bavarians marked their return from an eventful international break with an away fixture with Holstein Kiel at the Holstein-Stadion stadium, in Kiel City, Germany. It was the first replay of the January 2021 DFB Pokal away defeat at Holstein Kiel. A game that was regarded as "the beginning of the end" of FC Bayern Munich’s dominance of German football by Sport reporters. It was a perfect revenge for Vincent Kompany’s men while making sure they remained at the top of the League this weekend in pursuit of reclaiming the trophy they are known for.
Harry Kane netted a hat-trick on his return from International duty. The English striker represented his nation for a century of games against Finland last week at the UEFA Nations League and scored twice to gift England a comfortable 2-0 victory. The 31-year-old striker who joined the club in 2023 now has five hatricks in thirty-five games for the Bavarians in the Bundesliga. He is still waiting for a first official win at tournaments in his career and is surely up to a good start to lead Bayern to one.
Vincent Kompany continued to clear doubts on his eligibility to lead the German powerhouse. Taking over a broken team from Thomas Tuchel, the former Burnley coach has reignited the flair that has been missing in Bayern Minuich’s game strategies in the past season. He made three new changes to the team that beat Freiburg 2-0 before the International break.
Aleksandar Pavlovic, Mathys Tel, and Michael Olise were introduced in the starting line-up ahead of Sacha Boey, Joao Palhinha, and Kingsley Coman. Kimmich was relieved of his recurring right-back duties to pair with Palhinha in the defensive midfield. Kompany’s team lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation against Holstein Kiel’s 4-3-1-2 formation. The hosts were without their Marcel Rapp and made two changes in their line-up. Alexander Berhardsson and Marco Komenda were ruled out of the game due to fitness issues and were replaced by Nicolai Remberg and Dominik Javorcek. The game started in a crowded stadium filled with local supporters. The opposition crowd was silenced seconds after the kick-off whistle. Kane assisted Jamal Musiala 15 seconds into the game to make the joint second-fastest goal in Bundesliga history. The German wonder kid calmly slotted the ball below pass Goalkeeper Timon Weiner in split seconds to put his team in front. Only Giovane Elber has scored a quicker goal for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, finding the net in 11 seconds against Hamburg in 1998.
Seven Minutes into the game, a defensive error by newly appointed captain Lewis Holtby was tracked down by Serge Gnabry, allowing Harry Kane to find a one-time finish at the bottom corner to double Bayern’s advantage. The result got even worse when the home side conceded a third goal thirteen minutes from kick-off, this time with the aid of Nicolai Remberg's own goal. Credits to Jamal Musuala’s impressive dribbles and cut-back plays from the wings. Bayern dominated most of the first half and held the hosts to a half-field at home. Holstein Keil started getting into the game late in the first half but was punished by an unaware counter from Kingsley Coman. The French winger spotted Harry Kane who placed a perfect shot into the net from outside the opponent’s box, a brilliant 20-yard strike to end the first 45 minutes four goals up.
Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry were substituted at halftime to maintain their fitness and work rate through the season, with the game closely won, Vincent Kompany relied on traditional forward Thomas Muller and former Crystal Palace winger Micheal Olise to seal the game for the Bavarians.
Tymoteusz Puchacz and Max Geschwill were also introduced to Dominik Javorcek and Patrick Erras to bring much-needed relief to the home side who showed a massive improvement coming into the second half. They hit the crossbar in the 47th minute before substitutes Alphanso Davis and Konrad Laimer (64th minute) ignited the flame of the slow-paced game. Frenchman Micheal Olise found the back of the net with a swift rebound after Alphonso Davis’s effort was stopped by Timon Weiner.
Armin Gigovic and Lasse Rosenboom came in for the home side in the 76th minute to help quell the disorganized midfield. Kiel's fans were given a moment to celebrate when summer signings - Armin Gigovic headed in a consolation goal from Tymoteusz Puchacz's cross, beating Manuel Neuer on his near post to gift Holstein Kiel their first goal at home in the league this season. Kane sealed the win with a stoppage-time penalty, making it his fourth goal of the season and fifth hat-trick for Bayern.
Holstein Kiel players were generally poor in the game, they didn’t have a solid defense and made attacks way too easy for Vincent Kompany’s men. They lost the game from the very beginning, allowing through passes and easy dribbles within their half. The midfielders created attacking chances and relied too much on back passes in the first 45 minutes. Although they were the underdogs in the game, they failed to earn a first-division-worthy display which they displayed back in January 2021. Bayern, on the other hand, was perfect. Although they had chances to do better with the scoreline, they were clinical with their communication on the pitch and bossed most of the game.
While Kiel's poor performance made those passes easier to execute, it was refreshing to see Bayern players consistently make the best decisions, going for forward attacks instead of settling for sideways and back passes. Bayern Munich has now won all three league matches, while Holstein Kiel remains without a point and at the bottom of the Bundesliga Table after defeats to Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim in the opening games. Bayern Munich now has an eight-goal difference from three games and sits two points above Borussia Dortmund and three points ahead of defending Champions Bayer Leverkusen in the title race. Harry Kane has scored against all 18 Bundesliga teams he's faced, following in Robert Ledwandoski’s footsteps.
