Bayern Munich Lost Out on the Bundesliga Title for the First Time in Eleven Years

Bayern Munich Lost Out on the Bundesliga Title

Bayern’s devastating 2-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund at “Der Klassiker” last weekend might have caused them any chance of reclaiming the German title this season, it would be the first time in 11 straight seasons (2012/13 – 2022/23) that Bayern Munich failed to win the domestic league, marking an end to their long-lasting dominance in Germany.

The victory over the Bavarians marked Borussia Dortmund’s first win since November 2018, and they haven’t done so at the Allianz Arena since Jurgen Klopp’s team beat Pep Guardiola’s Bayern in 2014. Dortmund’s win against Bayern put them three points clear of Leipzig and straightened their grip on fourth place.

Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen made a dying-minute comeback to win Hoffenheim 2-1 and go 13 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with seven games remaining. They have remained unbeaten this season, with a remarkable thirty-four wins and five draws. With this form, it’s not likely that Bayern Munich would catch up with the red-hotted team. Thomas Tuchel and many Bayern executives have already embraced the current situation. The outgoing Bayern boss admitted to his side’s errors against their favorite rivals while conceding the German league chase this season.

In his words, “After today’s game there is no more need to count points. How many is it now? Congratulations to Leverkusen. “We are very disappointed because we felt we did not bring the necessary passion to win the game. It was too little from us when it came to the basics.”

Thomas Tuchel announced that he’ll leave the club at the end of the season in February after an agreement with the club’s executives. It would be disappointing to see that the ex-Chelsea boss would leave the club as the Manager that ends Bayern’s incredible dominance in Germany. The club and coach are locked in an awkward embrace since the decision was made. Bayern looked to have peaked up form again before the International break, putting the pressure on first-place Leverkusen. Now, all the smoke seems to have cleared up with the 2-0 loss to Dortmund.

Formal Bayern Star Didi Hamann alongside the German media has called for a change in the club’s management before the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals game against Arsenal to give the last surviving German team in the final eight a chance of proceeding in the competition. Thomas Tuchel is no stranger to critics and would be prepared for any eventuality. The 50-year-old German coach will receive substantial compensation of €10 million, excluding bonuses, upon the termination of his contract by the Bavarian club at the end of the season.

Bayern Munich’s President Herbert Hainer’s statement after the Dortmund game showed the board’s disappointment with the recent performances. He described the team as having “Far too little Passion” for the game. The executives are currently on the lookout to find a suitable replacement for Thomas Tuchel and end three long years of mismanagement in the club.

Xabi Alonso was the sole choice to be offered the Bayern Munich coaching job after an impressive season at Bayern Leverkusen. The former Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich midfielder took to the media to announce he would remain at Leverkusen next season despite links to several high-profile clubs, Real Madrid included.

Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi is recently a top choice to take over the role at Bayern Munich. The Italian coach has failed to commit to the English Club amidst rumors of his possible exit and Bayern sporting director Max Eberl is said to be a big fan of his work. Liverpool are also interested in the services of the Italian when Jurgen Klopp leaves the club at the end of the season. He has a release clause of around €10m-€15m.

Germany’s head coach and former coach Julian Nagelsmann is also a person of interest, should he decide to step out of the national team after Euro 2024. Although Bayern are not yet in agreement in re-appointing a coach they sacked in 2023. Jose Mourinho, The Special one, who is left with no club since parting ways with Roma has also been considered to take the club to the next level. The Interim Manager option is still open should Bayern decide to sack Thomas Tuchel before the end of the season.

Jurgen Klopp has decided to give himself a year away from the coaching role, sidelining him as an option to coach the Bavarians next season. The Liverpool coach might be open to taking on the less stressful national team job should Julian Nagelsmann part from the role.

Bayern’s defeat in the DFL Super-Cup, exit in the 2nd round of the DFB Cup, and failure to keep up with Leverkusen means that their final hope of silverware this season lies in the Champions League. They overturned a 1-0 victory at Rome against Lazio with an impressive 3-0 victory at the Allianz Arena in the Round of 16. The Bavarians would look towards getting back to winning ways when they face FC Heidenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday while gearing up for the clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, April 9.

Should they fall short of victory on the road to Wembley, it would mark their first season without a trophy since the 2011-12 season. In-form English striker Harry Kane left Tottenham last summer after 17 years in search of club glory. He has lived up to his goalscoring form and is the candidate for the Bundesliga golden-boot. Unfortunately, he would have to wait again to get his hands on a trophy if Bayern fails to win the Champions League.
